An Employee's Password (funny email forward)

During a recent password audit, it was found that one of our employees was using the following password:

MickeyMinniePlutoHueyLouieDeweyDonaldGoofy

When asked why such a big password, she said (wait for it)….

Here it comes…

… that it had to be at least 8 characters long.

We have now entered... the Twilight Zone.

It would seem there was a certain wavelength from the Brookline signing as another blogger & I managed to essentially get pictures of each other & at least vaguely remember each other there.

I love it when stuff like this happens. :)

Alton Brown at Brookline Booksmith & Coolidge Corner Theatre, Brookline, Mass.

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009.

I took a comp day from work (on what ended up being an extremely busy day) in order to make the trek & made a day of it. He left right around 11am, me chauffering my parents from northwestern Massachusetts to Brookline, a Boston suburb. Though we went just a touch farther to Dorchester & stopped at the Olive Garden there for lunch. Mom & I got the Mezzaluna plate with chicken & dad got the Pork Milanese. All of which was excellent. Back in the car for more driving around Boston, which wasn't bad, but I'm glad I don't have to do very often. We got back into Brookline just slightly after 4pm & found the parking lot. There, we played musical parking spots as the first one had a meter that ate my quarter, the second meter, though not expired gave no time readout, but third time was a charm & fed that meter to just under 2 hours.

We found the theater first right away. There was already a short stand-by line formed at the door. So, with time to kill, we headed over to the book store & wandered around there. Since I already had AB's book (& all his others) I bought a mathematics book just for kicks. What can I say? I'm a nerd. ;) Right inside the door, they had a huge (cardboard) stand-up of the book cover. I'd wanted to get a picture, but only had my cell phone at the time & people kept stopping at it & blocking it, so I gave up.

Having been told seating would begin at about 5:30pm, we left the book store at 5:15 & headed back to the theatre where, after going ALL the way around the block, realized that the ticket holders line was ALSO reaching into our parking lot. *face palm* The standby line was just as long. We weren't in line 5 minutes before we had atleast another 20 or so people behind us. It was amazing watching the people gather, especially in the standby line!

It was slightly after 5:30 & were still outside when we heard people cheer... AB had obviously arrived. I'd heard that Alton had jumped up onto the short wall outside the entrance & gave a short bow. AB don't need no stinkin' back door entrance. ;)

Moments later, the line moved & we got inside.

Despite being half way back in what was essentially a General Admission line, we had FANTASTIC seats on the left hand side, outside (near an Exit--more on that later), second row (or third if you count the extra 2 seats protruding into the round of the stage). Nothing was said of the use of cameras, so I had mine out & primed for filming.

Just barely after 6pm, Alton came down the aisle on our side, coffee in hand & sat on the stage to climb up. No steps necessary. I began filming just before he climbed on stage.

From here, I'm going to let my videos take over:

Part One: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew9lehdrZCw

Part Two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b1oEG0AXg4

Part Three: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVl2YGF70U4

Part Four: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dlEG0JSAvE

I'm hoping to come back with another post of notes on the videos, once I get the chance to rewatch & note-take. ;)

Immediately after I stopped recording, the masses were set free. We'd turned to head up the aisle--futile. Dad ended up pointing out someone slipping out the aforementioned Exit, so we followed them & got to the book store quickly! However, I assume that those who didn't make it inside the theater from the standby line went into the book store & formed the signing line. The signing line was a bit of a mishmash. We really weren't too sure at first if we were in the right place. However, where we were in line, we were less than 10 feet behind where Alton was signing. With nothing else to do & while close enough, I took a few pictures of AB signing. He'd turned around at one point & said loudly to only put names on the sticky notes & to leave the smart comments to him. ;)

The line began to move fairly quickly & we only had to wait just under an hour to get to the front of the line. I'd gone prepared: I was wearing my blue pineapple shirt (yes, the same style & almost same color as AB's from numerous episodes), had my FOA shirt underneath, & had a little baggie of gifts: three pins (Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, & a Honey Bee) & a motorcycle keychain with a timepiece. I'd had the thought while in line to through in my email address & name so he'd atleast have some type of ID of who gave the gift. I'm not expecting a response.

So, it was my turn & stepped up to the podium. AB greeted with "Hi, I'm Alton" & the assistant handed over this for AB to sign:

AB paused, looking at it, then asked me where I got it. I told him Cafe Press, to which he further asked if more were available as he turned it over to look at the back. I said yes, it was still available. Back to the front, he said "Look, I have a halo!" Then said paused again & added, "I look constipated."

And proceeded to sign it to me with "Cook Smart." I'd been hoping for the caricature, but seeing as this was an image of him, I wasn't let down by not getting it. I then proceeded to gift him the baggie of gifts. Alton was checking it out as I rattled off, briefly, what was it there (the pins were semi-bubble wrapped).

He turned & said loudly to the masses that everyone should bring gifts! ;) He said thank-you... then proceeded to say "You stole my shirt!" I responded, "Yes, I did." ;) I started laughing here. I'd already hard a large, stupid grin on my face & the "stole my shirt" line did me in.

I was still chuckling as dad came up with my book next & had it signed to me. Dad conversed briefly about how he had a 32-inch waist at 47 (since AB had mentioned he now has a 30-inch waist at 47). Anyway, there will be an update on waist size in 10 years. ;)

Mom came up last with the poster/book cover & had AB sign it with our last name. She made a comment along the lines of that they watch the show whenever I do. I quickly chimed in with "I force them to." AB grinned. We thanked him & headed along.

Sadly, I didn't get a pick of mom with AB as she had both cameras. *face palm* I apologized in the parking lot, but mom didn't mind. (I did because that would've been that many more pics of AB I could've had!)

We left Brookline shortly after 8pm. Not bad time.

Oh & the bookstore was giving out the Good Eats 10th Anniversary ball caps to the first 100 people in the signing line. Sadly, we weren't in the first 100 apparently as they were all out.

Fan Fiction with a twist

No matter how I try... I cannot seem to come up with any GOOD ideas for fic pertaining to AB & Good Eats. So, I decided to go in a slightly different direction with someone familiar: BA.

So, I took a bit of trivia thrown out by AB during an Ask portion on one of the DVDs where he commented, off the top of his head, that BA lived in Albuquerque. I came up with a reason why he ended up there & turned it into a short fic. This is definitely going to be a series of, most likely, short stories about BA, with the occasional guest appearance by AB.

Here's the first installment:

Pre-1999 (& pre-Good Eats)

The sun had already begun to set when he left the auto garage, motorcycle helmet under his arm. With sunglasses in place, he headed for his cherished Harley. He didn't go for the fancy bikes his brother liked. He grinned as he walked up to the 1965 Harley Davidson Flh Electra Glide with its white-flame paint job against the black body.

BA sat on the bike, started it up, then sighed, putting his helmet on. Speaking of his brother, he needed to see him.

BA revved the bike, then headed off, headed for his brother's house.

-----

Out in the backyard, the swing barely moved. It's occupant had long ago fallen asleep, one leg stretched out over the arm, the other leg had been moving the swing during consciousness. A straw hat was perfectly placed to keep the sun from the man's eyes.

In the distance, a motorcycle could be heard moving closer. It came closer still, yet the man in the swing didn't budge. The motorcycle engine was cut and BA appeared at the gate in the fence. He smirked then reached over the door to let himself in, something that his brother hated.

BA walked up behind the swing and pulled the hat off his sleeping brother's face. "Hey, sleeping ugly, wake up!"

Alton winced as he came back to consciousness, now minus the hat that had shielded his face so well. "BA?"

"No, it's the Easter Bunny," BA commented, dropping the hat on Alton's stomach.

"Funny," Alton said, grabbing his hat, then sat up and put the hat on his head. "What's going on?"

BA stopped at the end of the swing and leaned against the wooden frame. "I need money."

"So what else is new?" Alton said. They'd been through this song and dance before.

"Al, I swear this is it, this time," BA said, seriously.

Alton sighed. He hated that nickname and BA knew it, but he used it nonetheless. "What is it?"

"Albuquerque," BA replied.

Alton felt a headache coming on. "Albuquerque? Why there?"

"Automotive Tech certification by the National Auto Technicians Education Foundation," BA rattled off.

Despite the fact that his brother actually sounded like he knew what he was talking about, Alton was still skeptical. "And you couldn't get that around here?"

BA pulled his sunglasses off. "I tried everything nearby. They wouldn't accept me. Central New Mexico was the only one that did so that's where I'm going. Bro, I can't keep going the way I am... and mooching offa you all the time. We're 36. You've got that show of yours coming up in a few months. Me, what've I got? An auto garage that barely gets me minimum wage."

"I'm sorry, BA," Alton began, "I didn't know that you'd been rejected..."

"By almost everyone?" BA finished, then shrugged. "So what? I got accepted somewhere. I only needed one."

"It's too bad it's almost all the way across the country," Alton reminded him.

BA smirked, "Awe, little bro gonna miss me?"

"You're two minutes older than me, BA," Alton said, "that hardly constitutes me being a 'little brother'."

"Whatever. You went to Vermont! I'm going to New Mexico. I'll be back," BA said.

"Fine, alright, I'll help you out," Alton said, then sighed.

"Was that so difficult?" BA asked, with a grin.

Alton, straight-faced, replied, "Yes."

Blueberry Muffins

Blueberry Muffins

The recipe for these came from the "Better Homes" cookbook from umpteen years ago that mom always uses. (I would've used Alton Brown's, but I'm not crazy about yogurt.)

I did use a couple of hints from AB, however. I tossed the blueberries with a spoonful of the dry team & let the finished products cool on a tea towel (albeit, also on a rack).

I had one a few minutes later & they're wonderful! The recipe made 12 total, but I left two without blueberries for my dad, who prefers plain muffins with jam/jelly on them.

Long Time, No See

We're all moved in, you betcha.  Settled?  Ehhh, mostly.  I still have some boxes floating around the room, along with several still out in our storage room.

National Novel Writing Month, anyone?  I just wish they'd get the site back up & running so I can log the number of words so far.

We're moving!

And now the fun begins. Less than a half an hour ago, we got word the our (counter) offer was accepted! This is the first time I've ever moved so it's exciting! I'm gonna miss our current house since I've lived here all my life, but the new house is closer to my work & in a better location overall.

We already giving away our piano to a cousin, so that's one less thing to haul with us.

After 86 years, the Sox did it in 2004.

On October 28, 2007... they did it again!

Congratulations to my favorite baseball team: the Boston Red Sox.

Despite disagreeing with how management of the team works, I'm so happy to be a fan. Red Sox Nation is proud of you.

Now, if management could friggin' RESIGN MIKE LOWELL!!!

My hatred for Dunkin Donuts & their inconsiderate customers

My kvetch of the day #2: (don't remember the date)

Every morning I have to drive by the local Dunkin Donuts to get out of the city on my way to work. One particular morning, about a half dozen cars decided to wait in line for the drive thru on the street, oh-so-nicely blocking the entire lane from anyone trying to get around. I squeezed my way by, tooting my horn as I went by each car. I had so wanted to gun it, blaring my horn through the intersection but the light had JUST turned red, sufficiently & abruptly ending my peel out of vengence.

There's a Dunkin Donuts in Pittsfield that has a $50 fine for standing in the road. I wish they'd put that into effect here.

Moronic drivers

My kvetch of the day #1: (From 9/28/07)

Idiots that run red lights & then when you lean on the horn at them, they look at you like "What did I do?"

The idiot I encountered this morning would've slammed into my driver-side if I hadn't waited a few seconds after the light turned green. I always wait for any moving vehicles to stop before I go on green because I'd had the exact same thing pulling out from the local mall.

People just don't care.

Leon Redbone & Loudon Wainwright III concert at The Egg

I went to this concert last night & it was awesome! The 450 some-odd seat venue was nearly full & the crowd was into it. There was laughter & the occasional request thrown out. It ran about 2.5 hours including intermission. There was not a bad seat in the house.

Redbone plays music with a 20s/30s twinge. Wainwright's music has a comedic twinge, but with a feel of true-to-life stories.
